Tóm tắt

In this talk, Associate Professor Derks will present her recently published book Fragrant Frontier: Global Spice Entanglements from the Sino-Vietnamese Uplands (co-edited by Sarah Turner, Annuska Derks and Jean-François Rousseau). Spices have connected and transformed the environments, politics, economies and cuisines of vastly different societies around the world. Although we may keep a variety of spices on our kitchen shelves, their origins and trade routes often remain obscure. This book traces the roots and routes of three highly valued spices from the Sino-Vietnamese uplands, i.e. cardamom, cinnamon and star anise. It investigates the livelihoods of the ethnic minority farmers cultivating these spices, follows the commodity chains from farms to global supermarkets, and examines the commoditization of these distinctive crops.
